Digital Lending Specialist

Job Summary

Reporting to the Head – Retail Credit, the Digital Lending Specialist will provide end-to-end credit risk oversight and portfolio management for the Bank’s digital lending products across Retail, Commercial, and Enterprise segments. The role focuses on ensuring prudent portfolio growth, maintaining strong asset quality, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving data-driven credit decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Portfolio Management

  • Monitor and manage the performance of digital lending portfolios, including personal microloans, overdrafts, and unsecured SME digital lending products.

  • Track portfolio quality indicators such as:

    • Portfolio at Risk (PAR)

    • Non-Performing Loans (NPLs)

    • Roll rates

    • Vintage curves

    • Early warning indicators

    • Write-offs

  • Recommend and implement portfolio optimization strategies.

  • Conduct portfolio reviews by product, segment, and distribution channel.

  • Manage exposure limits and risk controls.

Credit Policy & Risk Management

  • Develop, review, and improve digital lending credit policies.

  • Design and maintain credit scorecards and decision rules.

  • Ensure alignment between underwriting standards, pricing, and the Bank’s risk appetite.

  • Approve credit exceptions within delegated authority.

  • Support new digital lending product approvals through risk assessments.

Credit Analytics & Decisioning

  • Validate and recalibrate credit scoring models.

  • Utilize data analytics to improve approval rates while maintaining portfolio quality.

  • Support the use of alternative data sources such as:

    • Mobile money data

    • Telecom data

    • Behavioral data (where permitted)

Portfolio Monitoring & Collections

  • Monitor:

    • First Payment Default (FPD)

    • Early delinquency

    • Forward-roll trends

  • Establish early warning systems for portfolio deterioration.

  • Work closely with the Collections team to improve recoveries and cure rates.

Reporting & Compliance

  • Prepare monthly portfolio risk reports for senior management and risk committees.

  • Ensure compliance with:

    • Bank of Uganda (BoU) credit guidelines

    • IFRS 9 impairment requirements

    • Consumer protection regulations

    • Data privacy and digital lending regulations

  • Support internal and external audits.

  • Maintain proper documentation and audit trails for automated lending decisions.

Technology & Process Improvement

  • Support optimization of:

    • Loan Origination Systems (LOS)

    • Decision Engines

    • Credit Bureau integrations

    • Fraud control systems

  • Drive automation of digital credit processes while maintaining strong controls.

  • Identify and address operational and process gaps.

Stakeholder Collaboration

Work closely with:

  • Retail Banking

  • Commercial Banking

  • Enterprise Banking

  • Business Solutions

  • Innovation Teams

  • Business Technology

  • Data Analytics

  • Collections & Recoveries

Provide risk input during product development and act as the primary credit risk advisor for digital lending initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in:

    • Finance

    • Statistics

    • Economics

    • Actuarial Science

    • Data Science

    • Business

    • Or a related field.

  • Relevant professional certifications are an added advantage.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in:

    • Digital lending

    • Financial services

    • Credit risk management

  • Demonstrated experience in:

    • Retail micro-lending

    • Digital and instant credit

    • SME unsecured lending

    • Portfolio analytics

Technical Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Proficiency in:

    • SQL

    • Advanced Microsoft Excel

    • Power BI or Tableau

    • Python (an added advantage)

  • Knowledge of digital lending platforms and financial systems.

  • Strong understanding of banking regulations and digital lending compliance requirements.

Competencies

  • Strong commercial and risk management mindset.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • High attention to detail.

  • Ability to interpret complex data and provide actionable insights.

  • Strong stakeholder management and collaboration skills.
