Internal Controls Officer

Reporting to: Manager – Internal Controls
Job Summary
The Internal Controls Officer will be responsible for the identification, measurement, assessment, monitoring, resolution, and reporting of control gaps by evaluating the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls. The role ensures compliance with policies and procedures while supporting the development of a strong risk and control culture across the bank.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct standard and ad-hoc reviews to identify control gaps and escalate them through appropriate governance channels in a timely manner.
Work with stakeholders in branch distribution to design, analyze, and implement remediation measures for identified control gaps.
Use reports and data analytics for periodic supervision and proactive risk management.
Liaise with risk champions at branches to ensure strong governance oversight and compliance with internal and external requirements.
Provide advice and guidance to branch teams on processes, procedures, and controls related to branch and credit operations.
Ensure timely closure or resolution of identified control gaps in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Track and ensure full closure of internal and external audit findings to prevent repeat issues.
Support the development and implementation of operational risk and compliance workshops and control awareness programs for branches.
Evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls by identifying process gaps and system failures and recommending improvements.
Participate in the review and improvement of policies, procedures, service level agreements, guidelines, and process flows for branches.
Identify income leakage gaps and recommend remedial actions to address them.
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized institution.
Minimum 4 years’ experience in a financial institution, with at least 2 years in banking operations, preferably with credit or business exposure.
Professional qualification in banking, risk management, or audit is an added advantage.
Knowledge of risk management processes, including methods for assessing and mitigating risk.
Good understanding of branch operations in the banking sector.
